Here’s what real New Yorkers have to say about Free File.
My mom has been using the free software to prepare her return for years. This year she showed me how to do it and it was easy. All I had to do was enter the information from my W-2 and 1099-T. - Aaliyah J., Queens, NY
My income is retirement and Social Security income, so I figured how had could it be to do it myself. I used the free software on the Tax Department website, and it was easy to file my return. - Lorraine K., Orange County, NY
For years, I paid someone else to do my taxes. Then I tried Free File. Now I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I’ll save $300 every year. - Owen D., Albany, NY
For everything you'll need to choose the right software and prepare your return, see Get ready to e-file your income tax return. For additional tools, see Filing season resource center for additional filing information. Note: Some software is available in Spanish. Look for Disponible en español after the product name.
The eligibility requirements for each software provider are different. If you do not meet the criteria for the software provider you choose, the software provider may charge you a fee. Please read the qualifying criteria carefully before you get started. Remember, no matter which option is right for you, e-file is always the fastest, easiest, safest choice! Note: If the Free File option you used last year is no longer listed, you can still e-file using one of the other options, but you will need to create an account with the new software. The IRS Free File program is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a coalition of leading tax preparation software companies. IRS Free File partners are online tax preparation companies that offer what is called the “IRS Free File” program, which provides free electronic tax preparation and filing of federal tax returns at no cost to qualifying taxpayers (some may also offer free state returns). The IRS Free File program PPP is not a traditional contractual arrangement; this partnership represents a balance of joint responsibility and collaboration that serves the interests of taxpayers and the Federal government. The online tax preparation software partners are part of the Free File Alliance, which coordinates with the IRS to provide free electronic federal tax preparation and filing to you. This non-profit, public-private partnership is dedicated to helping millions of people prepare and file their federal taxes online for free. The IRS does not endorse any individual partner company.
