When my internet went down when I was in the middle of watching a movie on my Sony TV, I decided to mirror the movie from my phone to the TV.

Using my phone as a hotspot was out of the question since I had used up all of my hotspot data.

Since my Wi-Fi network was still up, I tried to check if I could use the Sony TV’s native screen mirroring app to get my iPhone screen to cast to it.

I fiddled around with the menus on the TV and checked online for more solutions to be more thorough in my research.

After several hours of scouring through forum posts and articles, I finally understood what worked and what didn’t.

This article is a compilation of everything I had found and was worth documenting so that you can get your iPhone mirrored to your Sony TV in seconds.

Mirroring your iPhone to a Sony TV is possible through AirPlay and some other methods. Apple recommends you use AirPlay to do any mirroring to TVs.

Read on to find out the other methods apart from using AirPlay and how Chromecast and Miracast work with iPhones.

Can You Mirror Your iPhone To A Sony TV?

Unfortunately, the native Screen mirroring feature that Sony TVs come with does not support Apple iPads, iPhones, or Macbooks.

This does not mean that there isn’t any way to mirror the screen from your phone since there are a couple of methods involving third-party software or equipment.

Features like Wi-Fi Direct and AirPlay do let iPhones and other Apple devices mirror to Sony TVs.

But not every Sony TV has these features, so these methods will only work with TVs that are AirPlay compatible or have Wi-Fi Direct.

If you don’t have either of these features, you can still use Chromecast if your Sony TV runs on Google TV or do it the wired way with a Lightning-HDMI adapter.

I will be talking about all these methods here and what the easiest possible ways to do them would be.

Using Wi-Fi Direct

Wi-Fi Direct doesn’t require you to have a Wi-Fi network and is intended to make a Wi-Fi network anytime and anywhere with a reasonable degree of security.

Not every Sony TV supports Wi-Fi Direct, though, so you’ll need to check your TV Settings menu to see if it does.

Check with your TV’s Network settings or if you have an older TV, the Applications page, for the Wi-Fi direct feature.

Turn it on and note the WPA key; you will need this to connect your phone to the TV.

Then, follow these steps:

Keep the TV on the screen that shows the WPA key.
Go to your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and turn Wi-Fi on.
Look for an access point labeled Direct-xx-BRAVIA. Tap to connect to it.
Your TV will tell you if the connection was established.
Open the App Store.
Use the search bar to find an app called iMediaShare. With this app, you can mirror audio, video, or image content already on your device.

This method doesn’t let you mirror the content that needs to be streamed, though, which means Netflix and other streaming services are out of the picture.

It only works for content on your phone’s internal storage.

Using AirPlay 2

You can also use AirPlay, Apple’s native mirroring protocol, to get the content on your phone to your Sony TV.

Using AirPlay is the fastest and most convenient method discussed here, but not every TV supports AirPlay or AirPlay 2.

First, you’ll need to make sure your iPhone and the Sony TV are connected to the same network.

Then, follow the steps below:

Open the app that has the content that you want to mirror.
Start playing the content.
Look for the AirPlay logo, a square with an arrow on the bottom.
Tap the icon to start mirroring over AirPlay.

If you want to share your entire screen, open Control Center and tap Mirroring.

Keep in mind that not all apps work with the full-screen mirroring feature.

Using An Apple TV

If your TV doesn’t natively support AirPlay, but you have an Apple TV connected to it, you can use the AirPlay capabilities of the Apple TV instead.

Make sure both the Apple TV and your phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Then open Control Center by swiping up from the button of the screen and selecting Screen Mirroring.

Select the Apple TV from the list of devices, and your screen will be mirrored to the TV.

Make sure the TV’s input is changed to the Apple TV before you start mirroring.

Using An HDMI Adapter

If you don’t have access to any wireless methods I’ve talked about, there is still a way to mirror your phone, but it requires more cables.

To do this:

Get a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter from Apple and connect your TV to its HDMI port.
Connect the other end to your phone and go to your TV.
Change the input to the HDMI port you have the HDMI cable connected.
Your phone screen will now be displayed on your TV.

From here, you can play the content that you want, but you won’t be able to use your phone or keep it with you since it’s tethered to a cable.

Miracast And Chromecast

You can use Chromecast and Miracast, but their features are limited since they are not available natively.

Apps like YouTube use Chromecast to stream, but Apple always recommends that you use AirPlay to mirror content to an external display.

Getting Miracast or Chromecast to work on iPhone is a hassle, especially with Miracast, where you’ll have a jump through a lot of hoops and install some apps to get it working.

Chromecast works better with iPhone than Miracast because even though you have to use the Google Home app, the functionality and ease of use come close to what AirPlay offers.

Final Thoughts

Its always good to go for AirPlay instead of the other methods I’ve talked about here, not just because of the ease of use but the list of Sony TVs compatible with AirPlay is getting longer.

Almost any Sony TV you can get today has AirPlay capabilities, so it’s a no-brainer when looking for ways to mirror content from your phone to the TV.

With AirPlay 2, Apple has improved video and audio quality and has gotten a lot better at compensating for the lag that may arise when inputs are made when the screen is mirrored.

If you own an iPhone, always try to stream with AirPlay before considering anything else.
